Lecture Notes

In the ideas page we will have:
  • the UAL Proposal

Testing for our FMP is important. This means that we will have to do a test run, which is helpful for practicing existing skills and coming to terms with skills that we need to improve on. This can also be in the form of a Risk & Recce documents.

DSLR
3 pillars, also known as the Exposure Triangle.
Aperture
When the iris is large, then f-stop would be F2.4. However, if the iris is small, then the f-stop would be F22. If you do this (set to F22), nearly all of the shot will look 'in focus'. If you open up the lens (F1.4) then the foreground or the background will be in focus. The lower the number, the faster the shutter speed. Depth of field at a low f-stop is shallow.
A pro lens has a fixed aperture. Focal length is measured in metres.

Shutter Speed (blinking)
A high shutter speed lets in less light because the lens is mostly shut. 1/4 means a quarter of a second. DSLR's can have a shutter speed of 1/4000 (shortest shutter speed) of a second.

ISO
This refers to photography, it is genuinely not related to video. This is the sensitivity of the film roll. The nicest ISO is 100ASA and the second is 200ASA. If the image is quick moving, then you will need a higher ASA. For example, if you are recording or photographing Sports, then you will have to use a higher ASA. If you are taking photos or recording and the person running has motion blur, then it is likely that you will need a higher ASA - however, if you want the subject to have a motion blur then it is fine.

CCD (x3 is a pro camera, RGB)
The human eye picks up the colour green twice as much as red or blue. The sensor inside of a camera captures black and white, this is called photolithography ("lith" for short). There is a silicon wafer inside of the lens that has tiny wells, which is what determines wether the colour is black or white. Then, there is more silicone layers with similar wells that will determine the other colours that the lens is capturing.

There are different types of sensors - CCD, CMOS and FOVEON x3.

White Balance
Known as AWB. White balance applies when you are film inside and outside and is measured in kelvin (what is the Hue of my production?) - explore this. Use colour to tell your story.

Black Balance
This is for new camera calibration, or if the camera has not been turned on for years.

Gain
This is for low light conditions, AVOID USING IT. It makes the video look grainy, makes the footage look out of focus, too dark and unprofessional.

Rule of Thirds

Pitch
This is where you explain your idea and show your research that supports your idea. Also show who your audience is, use graphs and pie charts.

Pitch Pages:

  1. Title page
  2. Idea (what is it? what have you thought of? how have you developed it? beginning, middle and end)
  3. Research (what will you use for your research? sources? value?) & audience
  4. Swot of potential barriers (strengths? weaknesses? how will you overcome them?)
  5. Moodboard

Comments

  1. As college is closed to students from today. And the campuses close Friday 20th to staff...

I will be communicating on this page with you. I will be available to start our FMP clinic (questions and answers) and the usual weekly sessions will happen at the same time as the current timetable.

I will post the sessions in this page as to what to work on next. Needless to say... research!
